Yashasvi Jaiswal, the dynamic Indian opener, is on the cusp of achieving a remarkable feat. He is just 97 runs short of becoming the quickest Indian batsman to reach 2,000 Test runs. The young left-hander has the opportunity to eclipse Sunil Gavaskar’s long-standing record of 49 years when India takes on England in the second Test at Edgbaston, commencing on July 2nd.

Jaiswal’s consistent performance has been a significant advantage for India, especially during this period of transition in the Test format. His recent century in the first Test at Headingley demonstrated his exceptional talent, even though India suffered a five-wicket defeat. Despite India setting a challenging target of 371 runs, England, led by Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, chased it down with composure, giving them a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Jaiswal’s individual form provides a ray of hope for India as they seek to rebound at Edgbaston. In just 20 Tests, he has amassed 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record holder, Sunil Gavaskar, reached the 2,000 Test run milestone in his 23rd Test back in 1976. Gavaskar later became the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs. Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag follow on the list, having achieved the feat in their 25th Tests.
With his stylish strokeplay and remarkable composure, Jaiswal now has a golden opportunity to join and surpass these legends, providing India with a crucial boost in this must-win Test match.
