Sanju Samson’s remarkable form in the Kerala Cricket League continued on Tuesday, August 26, as he hammered a blistering 89 off just 46 balls for Kochi Blue Tigers against Thrissur Titans at the Greenfield Stadium in Trivandrum. The innings followed his century in the previous match, underlining his consistency and dominance with the bat.
Opening alongside Vinoop Manoharan, Samson immediately looked in control, showcasing his trademark timing and clean hitting. His knock featured four boundaries and nine towering sixes, keeping the scoreboard ticking even as wickets fell at the other end. Partnerships eluded the Kochi side, but Samson shouldered responsibility and maintained a brisk scoring rate, reflecting both maturity and attacking flair.
One of the standout moments of his innings came in the fifth over, when Titans captain Sijomon Joseph bowled a no-ball. Samson made full use of the reprieve, smashing consecutive boundaries — one over extra cover and another toward deep mid-wicket — collecting 13 runs off a single legal delivery in a rare and entertaining sequence.
Samson’s counter-attacking intent gave Kochi momentum, but his dismissal in the 18th over proved to be the turning point. Ajinas K forced a false shot, with Anand Krishnan completing a crucial catch to end Samson’s stay. Kochi eventually fell short despite their skipper’s heroics, as Titans chased the target off the final ball, thanks to decisive knocks from Ahammed Imran (72), Sijomon Joseph (42), and Arjun AK (31).
At 30, Samson seems to be in the prime of his career, currently second on the tournament's run-scoring charts with 223 runs in four games at a staggering average of 74.33 and a strike rate of 187.39. His form will be closely monitored by national selectors, especially with the Asia Cup approaching. Despite strong recent T20I outings for India, his place at the top of the order faces uncertainty following the return of Shubman Gill, who has been appointed vice-captain of the side.
For now, though, Samson’s fireworks in the Kerala Cricket League are a reminder of his immense talent and ability to influence games single-handedly.
